There are many factors that make a DJ great, like
professionalism, music knowledge, coordination and microphone abilities.
However, the most important factor (and for many people, the most surprising)
is this:
TRUST. When the DJ gains the trust of your guests, then
your event will be great. If you are a successful business owner, teacher, or
salesperson, you know this. When you can instill trust, people will follow.
There are two ways for you to find a DJ who will do
this:
1) You pick a DJ with personality and performance habits that
EXACTLY match you AND your group (very difficult for you to find because you
may have to interview many DJs). This type of DJ will ask you basic questions
(what kind of music do you want?, etc)
2) You pick a DJ who is so good
at adapting his personality and what he says and does to match your guests that
he can win over any group (these DJs are easy to find, they are the more
expensive ones). This type of DJ will ask you tons of questions about what you
want, who you are, and what your group is like. He will also alter the amount
and type of MC work to fit your group. Most of all, he will LISTEN to
you.
This explains why it is rare to have a successful event when you
get a DJ based on price. The price shopper assumes all DJs are the same. The
low budget DJ in turn treats all groups the same (no matter what he tells you
beforehand). The success of your event becomes a hit or miss proposition.
It is ALL about relationship. You need someone who can build a rapport
with your guests FAST. This is not achieved just by the DJ being a funny guy.
It is achieved by the guests sensing on a gut level that the DJ is there for
YOU, not for his wallet, or his own ego. The great DJs (and more expensive
ones) do this with EVERY group, the mid range DJs do it sometimes, and the low
price DJs rarely (if ever) do it at all.
At MAIN EVENT
PRODUCTIONS, this is what we do. We build relationships, starting with
you.
